What Is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that occurs during stage 5 kidney disease, also referred to as FSRD. This disease results in the inability of the kidneys to properly filter and clean the blood. Hemodialysis is a medical treatment that completes this vital function for the body, so that patients can continue to live their lives until a transplant is secured or other treatment plans are made.

How Does Hemodialysis Work?

If you have end stage renal disease, you understand that this means your kidneys are no longer able to perform the important function of cleaning and filtering the blood. However, when a doctor tells you that you need dialysis, you may be wondering about the specifics of this treatment and how it works. Hemodialysis essentially acts as a kidney that is outside your body. You are connected to a dialysis machine using an IV, and your blood is then transferred the dialyzer or “artificial kidney.” The dialyzer then removes all unwanted waste, toxins, and excess fluids from the blood. The clean, filtered blood is then returned to the body where it can perform its normal functions. Most patients will need to visit a dialysis center three times per week for a visit that should last between three to five hours.

What Are the Benefits of Hemodialysis?

While there are other options besides in-center dialysis, such as home dialysis, getting your treatment at a dialysis center is the best option for many patients. We provide this treatment right here in Joliet, IL, so you don’t have to go far to get the treatment you need. Our in-center hemodialysis treatments provide numerous benefits, including:
